About Us

What is Ptah?  Ptah is a principle in Ancient African culture that represents "Master Craftsmanship". The Manhattan based, family business "Studio of Ptah", creates amazing designs that truly embodies this principle. The business has become the premier design house for fine jewelry inspired by the art and meaningful symbols of Africa and other world cultures.

Studio of Ptah designs are hand designed by the prolific Artisan Heru Semahj, who quickly found inspiration for his art while discovering his roots.  Soon after, Semahj made a firm decision to dedicate his talents designing fine jewelry that has meaning. Studio of Ptah designs stand for love, family and other positive values.

Some people upon seeing his work call Semahj one of New York City's best kept secrets. However he has been at the forefront of his niche and has built a reputation as one of America's top African American jewelry designers.

Studio of Ptah’s designs are made to order.  This gives clients the options to customize any design to their specification.  In the Fine jewelry trade, service like this is often reserved for high profile clients or the very wealthy.  However, Studio of Ptah welcomes the creative input of every client and encourages them to express their individuality with their order.

Studio of Ptah has received support from many amazing people and is currently the personal jewelers for Erykah Badu, Wesley Snipes and Ben Vereen. They designed Erykah Badu’s signature Ankh ring among other pieces and jewelry worn by Andre Benjamin, Full Force, Gary Dourdan, Roshumba, Afraka Bambattaa, Earth Wind & Fire and others. They also designed and crafted the Engagement Ring and Bands for Wesley Snipes and Bands for Apprentice winner Randall Pinkett.

Essence Magazine has done a full page write up on Semahj's talents and his work has been published in many other publications. Heru Semahj's work was also the only fine jewelry featured in Harriette Cole’s bestselling books, "Jumping the Broom: The African American Wedding Planner" and her followup book "Vows".

In creating stylish, distinctive and unique fine jewelry, Studio of Ptah celebrates culture in an industry that simply focuses on the superficial. For that reason, Studio of Ptah stands out as the jewelry company of choice for those looking for jewels with meaning.
